Seascale was founded by a team that lives in the coastal communities where lobster fishing drives the local economy. We’ve worked on the same boats and waterways where Maine’s fishermen make their living and we understand the grit, determination and skill it takes to make it in this industry. With our roots in Maine’s lobstering communities, Seascale set out to create aquaculture solutions that respect tradition while unlocking new opportunities.
We’re not here to replace the industry—we’re here to strengthen it, one fisherman at a time.
Charlie Walsh
CTO / CoFounder
Charlie grew up on the coast of Maine and started his career cooking professionally and lobstering in the off season, all while managing puffin and tern colonies for USFWS in the summers. He has spent the last decade immersed in scaling aquaculture production and developing sustainable seafood products for the retail and wholesale market. From running the University of Maine’s experimental shellfish hatchery, scaling nursery and farm production of organic sugar kelp with Maine Sea Farms, growing oysters for Pemaquid Oyster, and building American Unagi’s processing and smokehouse operations, he has experience in the full spectrum of Maine aquaculture farm to table economy.
Jon Steuber
COO / CoFounder
Jon has worked as a lobster boat sternman in St. George, Maine since 2019. While commercial fishing, Jon helped his boat diversify income streams by expanding into kelp production and considers aquaculture as a key component to bolstering Maine’s working waterfront. To complement his time working in the commercial fishing and aquaculture industries, Jon also has 15 years’ experience in partnership development, program design and implementation, and non-profit management as the co-founder and former co-CEO of Valpo Surf Project, a youth mentorship and community development organization based in Valparaíso, Chile. He continues to drive the organization’s growth as a member of its board of directors in the U.S. and Chile.
